On the Matter of Idols

The Situation

Hockay has players.

Some players score more goals. Some make more saves. Some go to the Sixth. Some get into fights. Some receive modifiers.

Fans already have favorites.

At present, however, Hockay does not formally acknowledge this relationship.

A fan may choose one player to support above all others, follow their performances, celebrate their goals, and continue believing in them despite all available evidence — and Hockay does nothing.

The Problem

There is currently no way for a fan to designate one player as their Idol.

This is an oversight.

A fan should be able to say, in a manner recognized by Hockay, this is my guy.

Furthermore, when something notable happens to an Idol, the person who chose them should have a way of knowing about it.

At present, they receive nothing.

The Request

I ask that Le Council establish an Idol system.

Each registered fan should be permitted to designate one player as their Idol.

Once selected, the Idol should be associated with that fan's account and notable events involving that player should generate an update.

For example:

• If your Idol scores, you receive an update.
• If your Idol gets an assist, you receive an update.
• If your Idol goes to the Sixth, you receive an update.
• If your Idol gets into a fight, you receive an update.
• If your Idol receives modifiers, you receive an update.
• Other notable events involving the player could also be included.

Some of these events could also provide a small Looney bonus. An Idol scoring a goal, for example, could reward their follower with a few Looneys.

The exact rewards may, naturally, be determined by Le Council.

Idol Updates

The updates should be event-based rather than scheduled.

There does not need to be a daily or weekly news report about an Idol. If nothing happens, there is nothing to report.

If something happens to your Idol, however, you should know.

The updates could be delivered through an RSS feed or H.O.R.N., allowing fans to follow their Idol without requiring a completely separate notification system.

The Hockay website could also display these updates, with RSS/H.O.R.N. providing a convenient way for fans to subscribe to them.

The purpose is not to create a full news feed about every player.

It is to establish the feeling that this player is yours to follow.

Conclusion

Hockay already gives fans reasons to watch matches.

The Idol system would give them a reason to watch one particular player.

It would reward loyalty, encourage engagement, and make individual players feel more meaningful to the fans who follow them.

Most importantly, it would allow every fan to formally answer the only question that truly matters:

Who is your guy?
