The Playoffs Start Today
Le Council does not deliver preambles. The preamble is: the regular season is over. Matchday 38 was played in full on Friday. All ten games required overtime to resolveâevery last one. Triple Or Nothing produced exactly what Le Council intended and also, Le Council will admit, somewhat more than Le Council expected.
The standings are certified. The bracket is drawn. The Quarterfinals begin today.
Matchday 38: A Note From the Record
Le Council prepared a statement for the conclusion of the regular season. The statement was going to be brief, institutional, and appropriate to the occasion. It will still be brief.
All ten games on Matchday 38 required overtime. This is statistically improbable. Le Council has chosen not to investigate why. What Le Council will note is that the Triple Or Nothing modifierâwhich this body enacted on the basis that a season decided by inches deserved a final matchday that felt like a decisionâwas answered by every team simultaneously, in every arena, without apparent coordination. No game ended in regulation. No team earned nothing. The standings table was decided not once, not twice, but in ten consecutive overtime periods across six continents and one Antarctic research station.
The Montréal Maples won their eighth consecutive matchday as the statistical underdog. Le Council is filing this under the same folder it has been filing the previous seven. The folder is thick. The folder does not have a label yet because Le Council has not decided what to call it.
The Jambono resurfaced after the final horn. Le Council is aware. Things are different now. Le Council apologizes.
The Eight Teams
After thirty-eight matchdays, the league has narrowed to eight.
| Team | Arena |
|---|---|
| Perth Pyres | The Red Furnace |
| Rimini Rinklers | The Coastal Pavilion |
| Guadalajara Gatos | El RincĂłn Perdido |
| Tokyo Titans | The Neon Crossing |
| Havana Hammers | The Rhythm Bureau |
| Ushuaia Undertow | The South Passage |
| Montréal Maples | The Oldest Rink |
| McMurdo Monoliths | The Remote Range |
Le Council will note, without editorial comment, that the Prague Phantoms held first place in the league as recently as Matchday 28 and will not be playing tonight. Le Council will further note that the MontrĂ©al Maplesâwhose eight-win streak entering the playoffs is now the most improbable sequence of results in the First Season Everâqualified on the final night of the regular season. The Almighty Ice does not provide explanations. Le Council does not ask for them.
The Bracket
The draw was made. The matchups are fixed. Four series begin today.
| Matchup | Home Arena |
|---|---|
| Perth Pyres vs McMurdo Monoliths | The Red Furnace |
| Rimini Rinklers vs Ushuaia Undertow | The Coastal Pavilion |
| Guadalajara Gatos vs Montréal Maples | El Rincón Perdido |
| Tokyo Titans vs Havana Hammers | The Neon Crossing |
Each Quarterfinal is a best-of-3 series. A team must win twice to advance. One bad period no longer ends a seasonâit costs a game, and a game can be answered. Le Council enacted this format because a season this close deserved a postseason that was not decided by a single bounce off the boards. It stands by that decision. It will stand by it through all three games if necessary.
The higher seed hosts Games 1 and 3. Game 2 is on the road. Arena modifiers are in full effect. Le Council is not intervening on behalf of or against The Stone Opera, El RincĂłn Perdido, The Red Furnace, or any other building whose team has earned the right to use it.
Playoff Bets
Le Council's O.D.D.S. system has calculated three markets for each of the eight remaining teams. All three are open now and will remain open until the relevant round beginsâat which point they close permanently. Le Council advises not waiting.
Quarterfinal Advancement. Does this team win their series and advance to the Semifinals? Odds are based on team strength, recent form, home advantage, and factors O.D.D.S. has flagged as relevant but Le Council has not asked further questions about.
Semifinal Advancement. Does this team reach the Final? Bet now, before the Quarterfinals resolve. The uncertainty is structural. The odds account for it.
Champion. Does this team win it all? One team will. Le Council does not know which one. The Ice has not communicated its intentions, and Le Councilâafter thirty-eight matchdays of evidence that the standings table cannot be fully trustedâhas stopped assuming it can predict what comes next.
Looneys wagered are held until each round concludes. Payouts are immediate after the final game of each round. The ledger is permanent.
What Comes Next
The Quarterfinals are best-of-3. The Semifinals are best-of-3. The Final is one gameâthree one-hour periods, decided in a single sitting, by two teams that will have earned, twice each, in two rounds, the right to be in it.
After the Final: Rest Day. One day of silence. No games, no announcements. Le Council will not be issuing advisories. The Ice will be quietâor at least quieter than it has been. After that, the intersaison, and then whatever comes next.
But that is later. That is much later.
Today, four arenas open. Four series begin. Eight teams that spent thirty-eight matchdays proving they belonged here are about to discover whether belonging was enough.
Le Council wishes all remaining teams the appropriate luck. Le Council does not specify what "appropriate" means in this context. The Ice knows. The Puck is watching.
Stick around.
